Manos Hatzidakis was a famous Greek composer. A composer is someone who writes music. He was born in Xanthi, Greece, in 1925. He loved the sounds of his home. He often mixed new music with old folk songs. These folk songs are called rembetika. They were popular in Greek cities. Hatzidakis helped people see the beauty in this music.

He wrote music for many movies. In 1960, he won a big prize called an Academy Award. He won it for the song "Never on Sunday." However, he did not go to pick up his award. He felt the movie did not show his city, Athens, in a good way. He wanted to protect the image of his home.

Manos also helped other artists. He started a group called the Orchestra of Colours. This group played music by Greek composers. He also started a music contest for new writers. He lived in the United States for a few years. He later moved back to Greece. He died in Athens in 1994. People still remember him for his great skill.
