It began a very long time ago around 800 BC. These writings cover many different eras and styles. The stories range from the oldest known Greek works to modern books. People use these writings to learn about history and art. This long tradition helps us understand how people thought long ago. It is a way for people to share their world.

In the very beginning, people did not write much.

Instead, they used their voices to tell stories. They created poems meant to be sung or spoken out loud. These early poems often focused on myths and legends. A famous poet named Homer wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey. Another poet named Hesiod wrote Works and Days and Theogony. These works were fixed in place around 800 BC.

As time passed, the Classical period brought many new ways to write.

Writers began to make plays for comedy and tragedy. Famous playwrights like Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides wrote many tragedies. Aristophanes wrote funny plays called comedies. This era also saw the rise of great thinkers. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle were very famous philosophers. They used writing to explore big ideas about life.

New eras brought even more changes to the Greek world.

Famous historians included Polybius and Plutarch. This period also saw the writing of the New Testament. Scientists like Galen wrote about medicine and the human body.

Byzantine and modern eras helped keep the tradition alive.

Modern Greek literature uses the common Greek language we know today. A famous poem from around 1600 is called Erotokritos. Figures like Adamantios Korais helped shape new ideas. Today, Greek writers like Seferis and Elytis have even won Nobel Prizes. Their stories still reach people all over the world.
