It began around 800 BC and continues into the present day. These works include stories, poems, histories, and scientific studies. They are written in various forms of the Greek language. This tradition spans from the oldest surviving Greek texts to modern books. It serves as a vital record of human thought and culture. The literature reflects the changing world through many different eras.

Ancient Greek literature developed from the proto-Indo-European language. About two-thirds of Greek words can be traced back to this source. Early writers used different alphabets and syllabaries to record their ideas. Eventually, they adopted a Phoenician-derived alphabet. This alphabet became common in Greek Ionia. By the fifth century BC, Athens had fully adopted it. This writing system allowed for more complex and permanent records.

The Preclassical period began around 800 BC. During this time, literature was primarily an oral tradition.
