Long ago, people in Greece asked big questions.
One man named Thales thought water made everything. He even taught how to measure tall buildings. Another thinker, Anaximenes, thought air was the main part of the world.
Pythagoras believed math was very important. He thought math helped explain the world. He also had a great respect for animals.
Heraclitus had a different idea. He said everything is always changing. He thought fire was a key part of this.
These thinkers helped start new ways of learning. Their ideas still matter today.
Long ago, people in Greece began to ask big questions.
Many thinkers looked for one main thing that makes up everything. This is often called the arche. Thales of Miletus thought everything came from water. Anaximenes thought the main part of the world was air. Another man, Anaximander, thought it was something unlimited.
Some thinkers focused on different ideas. Pythagoras believed math was the key to the world. He thought math helped explain how things work. Heraclitus had a different view. He said everything is always changing. He used the word Logos to describe a plan for this change.
Other thinkers, like Parmenides, disagreed with the idea of change. He argued that true being is unchanging and stays the same. These early ideas helped shape how we learn today. They led to many new ways of thinking in Rome and beyond.
Ancient Greek philosophy began in the 6th century BC. It was a new way to study the world.

Early thinkers searched for a single starting substance. They called this the arche. Thales of Miletus was a very important figure. Aristotle called him the first philosopher. Thales believed that water was the main substance. He used reasons to explain the natural world. Anaximander was his student and had a different idea. He thought the arche was something unlimited or indefinite. Anaximenes believed the main substance was actually air. These thinkers were trying to find what stays the same. They were making early attempts at what we call science.
Some thinkers focused on different ways to understand life. Pythagoras lived around the same time as Xenophanes. He founded a school that mixed math with belief. He thought math was a permanent principle behind everything. He also believed in a special respect for animals. Heraclitus had a very different view of the world. He taught that everything is always flowing or changing. He used the word Logos to describe a plan. This plan helps manage the constant change in the world.
Other thinkers argued about whether things truly change. Parmenides of Elea disagreed with the idea of flux. He argued that true being is unchanging and one. He believed that movement was not actually possible. This idea went against what people saw with their eyes. Xenophanes also offered a unique way of thinking. He argued that natural causes explain what happens in nature. He even joked about how people imagine gods. He said people often make gods look like themselves.
These early ideas grew into much bigger traditions. The work of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle was very famous. People often call the time before Socrates "pre-Socratic." This helped mark a shift in how philosophy worked. These Greek ideas moved into Roman philosophy later. They also influenced early Islamic thought and the Renaissance. Even the word philosopher may come from Egypt. It might be a translation of a word for "lover of wisdom."
