They wanted to know how the world began. These thinkers lived before a famous man named Socrates. We call them the pre-Socratics. Most of their books are lost to us now. We only know their ideas from other writers. These writings are called testimonia.

These thinkers looked for natural rules. They did not just use stories about gods. Some people in Miletus thought water was the start of everything. Others thought air was the main part of the world. Pythagoras believed that numbers made up the universe.

Democritus had a different idea. He thought the world was made of tiny bits called atoms.

These thinkers lived in busy Greek towns. They traded goods like oil and wine. They also shared many new ideas. This helped them think about the world in new ways. Their work helped lead to the science we use today.

Long ago in ancient Greece, a group of thinkers changed how humans understood the world. These people are known as the pre-Socratics. They lived before the famous philosopher Socrates. Most of these thinkers were interested in cosmology. This is the study of how the universe began and what it is made of. They also looked at human society, religion, and ethics. Instead of saying gods caused everything, they looked for natural laws. They wanted to find the "arche." This Greek word means the origin or the main substance of everything.

These thinkers had many different ideas about what the world was made of. In the 6th century BC, three men from Miletus started this work. Thales believed water was the most important thing. Anaximander thought the origin was something called "apeiron," which means the unlimited. Anaximenes believed air was the main substance. Other thinkers had very different views. Heraclitus said fire was the arche of the world. Pythagoras believed the entire universe was made of numbers.

Democritus and Leucippus even thought of "atomism." They believed that only matter and a void exist.

This new way of thinking grew in a very special time. Many Greek towns, called poleis, were becoming independent. These towns were often wealthy because of trade. People traded goods like wine, oil, and grain. This trade helped people move between different places. When people traveled, they shared their ideas. The Greeks also learned to use an alphabet around 800 BC. This helped them record their thoughts. Having many different cultures nearby also helped them see the world in new ways.

We do not have the original books written by these philosophers. Almost all of their writing has been lost to time. Instead, we learn about them through "testimonia." These are accounts written by later authors like Plato and Aristotle. Some of these later writers were biased. This makes it hard to know exactly what the early thinkers believed. Scholars sometimes call these collections of opinions "doxography." In 1903, two professors named Diels and Kranz collected all the known fragments. They created a special numbering system to help people find specific quotes.

Even though they lived a long time ago, these thinkers still matter today. They paved the way for the scientific method we use now. They helped start ideas like naturalism and rationalism. Some people call them "physicists" because they studied nature. This was different from the storytellers who only spoke of myths. Their work was a big step toward how we study the world today. They moved humans away from just telling stories about gods. Instead, they began to look for the real rules of nature.

Pre-Socratic philosophy refers to the early Greek philosophical tradition. It emerged before the era of Socrates. These thinkers primarily focused on cosmology. Cosmology is the study of the universe's origins and its fundamental substances. They also investigated natural laws, human society, ethics, and religion. Unlike earlier storytellers, they sought natural explanations for the world. They moved away from attributing natural events to the actions of gods. This shift helped establish the foundations of Western rationalism and naturalism.

To understand their process, we must look at the concept of the arche. The arche is a Greek term for the origin, principle, or primary substance of the world. Philosophers attempted to identify this single underlying element. For example, the Milesian school sought a physical starting point for all matter. They used observation to propose different substances. This method laid the early groundwork for scientific methodology. They were often called physikoi, or physicists, because they studied physis, which means nature.

Different schools of thought offered various theories about the universe. The Milesians were among the first to propose specific arche substances. Thales identified water as the primary substance. Anaximander proposed the apeiron, which means the unlimited. Anaximenes suggested that air was the fundamental element. Later, the Eleatic school challenged these ideas of change. Parmenides argued that only one thing exists and nothing can truly change. His followers, Zeno of Elea and Melissus, defended this view.

Other thinkers proposed more complex or pluralistic models. Anaxagoras and Empedocles argued that the universe was created from multiple elements. This was a departure from the idea of a single arche. The Atomists, including Leucippus and Democritus, introduced a very specific theory. They believed that only matter and the void exist. This idea is known as atomism. Meanwhile, the Sophists moved toward philosophical relativism. This shifted the focus toward how different people perceive truth and morality.

This intellectual movement began in the 6th century BC. It flourished in Ionia, located on the western coast of Anatolia. Many thinkers lived in Miletus, a wealthy center of trade. The Greek world was changing during this period. The Persian Achaemenid Empire was expanding toward the west. At the same time, Greeks were advancing along new sea routes. This era of trade allowed for a massive exchange of ideas. The development of the Greek alphabet around 800 BC also aided this growth.

We do not possess the original writings of most pre-Socratics. Their work was almost entirely lost to history. Instead, we rely on testimonia, which are accounts written by later authors. These include thinkers like Plato, Aristotle, and Plutarch. Because these later writers were often biased, interpreting the original views is difficult. Scholars use the term doxography to describe these collections of opinions. In 1903, H. Diels and W. Kranz published a collection of these fragments. They created the Diels–Kranz numbering system to organize them.

Modern scholars often prefer the term "early Greek philosophy." This is because the label "pre-Socratic" can be misleading. Some pre-Socratics were actually contemporaries of Socrates. The term also implies that these thinkers were merely a stepping stone. However, their impact on the development of logic and science is immense. They transitioned human thought from myth to reason. They moved from the mythologoi, or storytellers, toward a systematic study of the cosmos.
