Long ago, a man named Pythagoras lived.

Pythagoras was a thinker who lived a long time ago.

The group was split into two parts. One group was the akousmatikoi. These people were listeners. They followed the sayings of Pythagoras. They lived simply and stayed quiet. The other group was the mathematikoi. These people studied more math and science. Pythagoras was famous for his work with math. He is linked to a rule about triangles. This is called the Pythagorean theorem. He also studied music. He found that music has math in it.
Many people studied these ideas later. The famous thinker Plato learned from them. Even though the groups changed, their ideas stayed important. Their work helped shape how people think today.
Pythagoreanism was a special way of living and thinking. It began around the 6th century BC. This group was based on the teachings of a man named Pythagoras.

Inside the group, there were two different ways to learn. One group was called the akousmatikoi, or "those who listen."

Pythagoras himself was a very famous thinker. He was born on the island of Samos around 570 BC. Before he went to Croton, he traveled to Egypt and Babylonia.

Life was not always easy for the Pythagoreans. There were times of great violence in the area. In Croton, a house where they met was set on fire. This attack was led by a man named Cylon.
Pythagorean ideas changed the way people thought for a long time. One very famous thinker named Plato learned from them.
Pythagoreanism was a complex philosophical and religious tradition. It began in the 6th century BC. This movement was based on the teachings of Pythagoras.
The community operated through a specific social structure. It was divided into two distinct groups. The first group was the akousmatikoi, or "those who listen." They focused on religious and ritual elements. They followed the akousmata, which were the oral sayings of Pythagoras. They lived very simple lives. They practiced silence and avoided meat.

Becoming a member required a long process. New followers underwent a five-year initiation period. During this time, they listened to teachings in silence. This was part of an esoteric path. An esoteric path is a way of learning meant for a small, chosen group. After initiation, followers could move from being akousmatikoi to mathematikoi. The community also had strict rules for daily life. These included rules on diet, clothing, and behavior. Some sources even mention rules about avoiding certain foods like beans.
Pythagoras was a highly influential figure. He was born on the island of Samos around 570 BC. Before settling in Italy, he traveled to Egypt and Babylonia. He established himself in Croton around 530 BC. He held significant political influence there. The Croton Council even appointed him to official positions. He was in charge of education in the city. He also advocated for moderation and respect for the state.
Pythagoras is famous for his mathematical and musical discoveries. He is credited with the Pythagorean theorem. This theorem explains relationships in right-angled triangles.
The history of the movement was marked by conflict. In Croton, an attack led by Cylon occurred. This included an arson attack on a Pythagorean meeting place. Many followers were killed in these attacks. Around 450 BC, more attacks happened across Magna Graecia. This led to political instability. Many philosophers fled Italy. Some moved to mainland Greece. Others moved to Rhegium. By 400 BC, most Pythagoreans had left Italy.
Despite these hardships, the tradition had a lasting impact. Pythagorean ideas influenced the philosopher Plato. This influence spread through him to much of Western philosophy. The movement was later revived as Neopythagoreanism in the 1st century BC. Some followers also influenced the Bacchic cults and Orphism. Even after the organized schools died out, their ideas remained. The study of numbers and patterns continues to shape how we understand the world today.
