It grew from Ancient Greek traditions and helped lead to Modern Greek writing. This literature used two different ways of speaking Greek. One was a formal style for scholars called Attic Greek. The other was a common way for everyday people called Koine Greek. People wrote about many things like religion, poetry, and history.

These writings show how people thought and lived during that long time.

Historians were one important group of writers.

These writers were often very important people in society. They were sometimes judges, generals, or even kings and queens. They wrote carefully about politics and big events. Many of them used older Greek writers as their models. This created a special "mosaic style" where they blended different ways of writing. They tried to be fair and objective in their stories.

One famous historian was Procopius from the 6th century.

In the 12th century, she wrote a book called the "Alexiad." This book tells the story of her father, Alexius. Other writers like Nicephorus Gregoras also used the classics to help them write. These authors were the intellectual leaders of their time.

Chroniclers were a different kind of writer for the public.

Their books were often like a patchwork of different stories. They wrote about events that were wonderful or even scary. These stories were often told in the common way of speaking. Chroniclers helped spread Byzantine culture to new groups of people. This included the Slavic, Magyar, and Turkic peoples. Their work was very important for the history of civilization.

Some of the most famous chronicles were written by Joannes Malalas and Theophanes.

Byzantine literature refers to the Greek writings produced during the Middle Ages.

Porphyrogenetus.jpg
Porphyrogenetus.jpg
This body of work was created either within the Byzantine Empire or by Greek speakers living outside its borders. It acts as a vital bridge in history. It is the direct successor to Ancient Greek literature and serves as the foundation for Modern Greek literature. The tradition was shaped by the competing influences of Hellenism, Christianity, and, in the empire's earlier years, Paganism.

One unique feature of this era was linguistic diglossy. This means two distinct forms of Greek were used at once. Scholars used a formal dialect called Attic Greek. Meanwhile, the everyday people used a vernacular based on Koine Greek.

Scholars categorize Byzantine literature into five distinct groups. The first three groups continued ancient traditions. These included historians and chroniclers, encyclopedists and essayists, and writers of secular poetry. The final two groups consisted of entirely new genres. These were ecclesiastical and theological literature, which focused on the church, and popular poetry.

This classification helps us understand how writers balanced old customs with new religious needs.

Historians and annalists represent the two main types of secular prose. These two groups show the dual nature of Byzantine intellectual life. Historians were often members of the aristocracy. Their work was scholarly, polished, and focused on recent political history. They were often high-ranking officials like jurists, statesmen, or even emperors.

For example, the princess Anna Comnena wrote the "Alexiad" to glorify her father, Alexius. These writers used a "mosaic style." They would take different classical authors as models to create a complex, blended way of writing.

Annalists, or chroniclers, served a very different purpose. While historians were for the elite, chronicles were intended for the general public.

Chroniclers often used the popular, everyday tongue rather than formal Greek. Their writing style was more like a patchwork of different sources. They recorded the history of the whole world as it was known in the Middle Ages. These works often described events as wonderful or dreadful through a Christian lens. Because they were written in the common language, they helped spread Byzantine culture to the Slavic, Magyar, and Turkic peoples.

History shows that these two groups peaked at different times. The first great period of historians included the 6th and 7th centuries. This era was dominated by Procopius. He is famous for his precision and his ability to write in an ornate style.

He wrote about Emperor Justinian I in ways that were both highly praising and very critical. The second great period of historians occurred from the 11th to the 15th centuries. This group included the Comneni and Palaeologi dynasties. Unlike the earlier historians, these writers were often more subjective. Their close ties to the government meant their work often showed personal or political bias.

Specific individuals helped define these eras. In the 10th century, Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus stood out. He was a rare example of a leader who was also a great historian. He wrote about the administration and ceremonies of the Byzantine Court. In the realm of chronicles, the 9th century was a peak period. The monk Theophanes wrote a chronicle in Asia Minor that was so important it was translated into Latin.

Later, in the 12th century, Joannes Zonaras created a "Universal Chronicle" that blended ancient writings into a better narrative.

Byzantine literature is more than just words on a page; it is a connection to broader human systems. It connects the classical world of the Greeks to the religious world of the Middle Ages. It also connects the high culture of the imperial court to the popular culture of the common people. Through its various genres, it preserved the history of civilization and the development of languages. Even though some scholars once held it in low regard, modern researchers now see it as a massive and essential part of human history.
