It began around 800 BC and continues into the present day. These works include stories, poems, histories, and scientific studies. They are written in various forms of the Greek language. This tradition spans from the oldest surviving Greek texts to modern books. It serves as a vital record of human thought and culture. The literature reflects the changing world through many different eras.

Ancient Greek literature developed from the proto-Indo-European language. About two-thirds of Greek words can be traced back to this source.

Early writers used different alphabets and syllabaries to record their ideas. Eventually, they adopted a Phoenician-derived alphabet. This alphabet became common in Greek Ionia. By the fifth century BC, Athens had fully adopted it. This writing system allowed for more complex and permanent records.

The Preclassical period began around 800 BC. During this time, literature was primarily an oral tradition.

People created poems meant to be sung or recited out loud. These early poems often focused on myths and religious legends. Homer is a central figure from this era. He is known for the Iliad and the Odyssey. Another poet, Hesiod, wrote Works and Days and Theogony. These works were established around 800 BC.

As the Classical period arrived, around 500 BC, new genres emerged. Writers developed lyrical poetry, odes, and elegies.

Drama also became a major part of culture. Tragedies were written by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Comedies arose from rituals honoring the god Dionysus. Aristophanes is a notable writer of these comic plays. This era also saw the rise of great historians like Herodotus and Thucydides. Philosophy became a massive achievement during the 4th century BC. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle were the most famous philosophers of this age.

The Hellenistic period followed the death of Alexander the Great.

This era lasted until the rise of Roman rule. The Greek colony of Alexandria in Egypt became a major cultural hub. Theocritus lived from 310 to 250 BC and created pastoral poetry. Menander was a principal writer of New Comedy. One vital achievement was the Septuagint. This was a translation of the Old Testament into Greek. It was completed in Alexandria by the end of the 2nd century BC.

During the Roman Age, which lasted until 284 AD, literature expanded into many fields.

Historians like Polybius and Plutarch wrote significant works. Science also saw great progress during this time. The physician Galen studied anatomy, physiology, and neurology. This period also saw the writing of the New Testament. The Gospels and the Epistles of Saint Paul were composed in Koine Greek. Many ancient Greek novels were also written during these centuries.

Byzantine literature flourished within the Byzantine Empire from 330 to 1453.
