It began with the Minoans on the island of Crete. They built amazing palaces like the one at Knossos.

This palace had over 500 rooms and many terraces. It even had bathtubs with drainage systems! The walls were covered in bright frescos, which are paintings made on wet plaster. Later, the Mycenaeans built their own grand structures. These early groups laid the foundation for everything that followed. Greek ideas about equality and law still help shape our world today.

Ancient Greek builders were masters of balance and beauty.

They created a style of architecture that inspired many others. Their temples often used a base with stairs called a crepidoma. They also used columns to hold up heavy roofs. Architects used three main styles, or orders, for these columns. The Doric style is stout and very simple. The Ionic style is slimmer and has scrolls on the top. The Corinthian style is the most fancy, with carvings of acanthus leaves.

They built many churches called basilicas. These buildings looked different from old Greek temples. While temples focused on the outside, Byzantine churches focused on the inside. They used stone and brick instead of just marble.

Architects decorated the interiors with beautiful mosaics. These are pictures made of small pieces of stone or glass. Many of these mosaics used bright, golden backgrounds to shine. This style still inspires many Eastern Orthodox churches today.

In the 1800s, many buildings used the Neoclassical style. This style looked back at the beauty of ancient Greece. Modern cities like Athens have seen many changes too. After World War II, many new apartment buildings were built. This helped the economy grow and helped the country recover. In the 1960s, the first tall skyscrapers appeared in the cities. From ancient temples to modern towers, the Greek story keeps moving forward.
