Ancient Greek architecture is famous for its beauty and balance. The Greeks, or Hellenes, built many kinds of structures. Most people know them for their grand temples. The Parthenon is the most famous temple of all.

They also built open-air theatres for crowds. These theatres often used the natural slope of a hill for seating. Other buildings included the agora, which was a public square. They also made stoas, which were long halls with columns. People used bouleuterions for town council meetings. They even built stadiums for sports and large tombs called mausoleums.

Builders chose materials that were easy to find in Greece. The land is very rocky with many mountains. Limestone was easy to find and work with. They also used high-quality white marble from islands like Paros and Naxos. This fine marble helped them make very precise details.

They used potter's clay for roof tiles and decorations. This clay was found in many places, especially near Athens. The bright Greek sun made the smooth marble surfaces shine. The clear light created sharp shadows on the buildings. This helped the details stand out in the landscape.

History shows that Greek culture changed over many centuries. Before the Greeks, the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures lived there. The Minoans lived on Crete and made decorated palaces. The Mycenaeans built strong citadels and large tombs. After these cultures ended, there was a period called the Greek Dark Age. Later, the Hellenic period began around 900 BC. Substantial buildings started appearing around 600 BC. During the Hellenistic period, Greek culture spread even further. This happened after Alexander the Great conquered new lands.

Later, the Roman Empire also adopted much of this culture.

Greek architecture uses three main styles called orders. These are the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders. These styles were very formal in their structure and decoration. Temples were often built on high ground to look elegant. Architects wanted people to see the buildings from all angles. They used symmetry and proportion to make things look right. The Greeks believed in order and reason in the universe. They applied these ideas to their buildings to find perfection. This way of building had a huge effect on the Western world. It influenced how people built things for a very long time.

These ancient ideas still link to the world we see today. The architecture of ancient Rome grew out of Greek styles. Much of this influence stayed in Italy until now. During the Renaissance, people started many Greek revivals. They loved the ideas of balance and beauty. Later, styles like Neoclassical and Greek Revival architecture followed. These styles copied the precise forms of the ancient Greeks. Even today, we can see how much we value their sense of order. Their work shows a deep passion for human intellect and beauty.
