It is a way to turn a sketch or a plan into a real, physical object. Architects use math and engineering to make sure these structures are safe to use. This work is much more than just building a house or a wall. People often see buildings as beautiful works of art or symbols of a culture.

Because it expresses what people value, architecture is considered a form of art. It can even include things like designing a ship or decorating the inside of a room.

Creating a building involves many careful steps. First, an architect must conceive and plan the idea. They spend time sketching and designing the shapes of the structure. Next, they must use civil engineering techniques to make the design work. This includes choosing the right materials like stone, wood, or concrete.

Later, civilizations in Egypt and Mesopotamia built huge structures. These buildings often showed the power of a ruler or honored the divine. In many places, secrets of building were passed down from fathers to their sons.

Many famous thinkers have written about how to build well.

A Roman named Vitruvius wrote a book called De architectura in the 1st century BC. He said a good building needs three things: durability, utility, and beauty. Centuries later, Leon Battista Alberti said beauty comes from perfect proportions. In the 19th century, Louis Sullivan said "form follows function." This meant a building's shape should match its job.

After World War I, modern architecture became popular. Architects used new materials and simple geometric shapes to build for the working classes. This led to the creation of very tall high-rise buildings. Later, some people felt these designs were too plain. This led to new styles called postmodern and contemporary architecture.
