This story was even made into a movie.

Kazantzakis loved to travel the world. He visited many places like Russia, China, and Japan. He used his travels to learn about people. He often wrote in Demotic Greek. This was the way common people spoke. He wanted his writing to feel real to them. He also wanted to save their local words and sayings.

He was a very successful writer. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize nine times. He lost the prize by just one vote in 1957. Another writer, Albert Camus, said he deserved it much more. Kazantzakis died in West Germany at age 74. He is buried in Crete. His grave has a special message. It says, "I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free."
