Zeno's Conscience is a famous novel by the Italian writer Italo Svevo.

The book was first published in 1923 after a long period of silence from the author. It is written as a personal diary by a man named Zeno Cosini. Zeno's doctor suggested he write these memoirs to help with his health. The doctor even published the diary as a way to get revenge. This is because Zeno had stopped visiting his doctor for treatment. The story is unique because it focuses on a character's inner thoughts.

It is quite different from Svevo's earlier books, which followed a more traditional style.

Zeno is an unreliable narrator, which means he might not tell the whole truth.

His doctor warns readers that the diary contains both truths and lies. The book does not follow a straight timeline from start to finish. Instead, it uses large chapters to explore different themes in Zeno's life. One major theme is his struggle to quit smoking cigarettes. He often tries to smoke a "last cigarette" to end the habit. He even tries to quit based on the patterns of dates on a calendar. Despite many attempts and even visiting a clinic, he cannot truly stop.

Svevo wrote this novel after two other books were ignored by the public.

His first two novels were titled Una vita and Senilità. Those books followed a style called naturalism, which describes things very realistically. Zeno's Conscience changed things by focusing on feelings and the first-person point of view. The book gained fame through the help of important people. The famous writer James Joyce liked the book very much. He showed it to French critics Valery Larbaud and Benjamin Crémieux. Later, the Italian poet Eugenio Montale helped the book become a success in Italy.

Zeno's life includes many people and complicated events.

He meets a businessman named Giovanni Malfenti and his four daughters. Zeno tries to court Ada, but she chooses a man named Guido Speier instead. Eventually, Zeno marries Augusta, one of the other daughters. He also has an affair with a singer named Carla. The story moves through his business deals and his time in the city of Trieste. It even covers the difficult years of the First World War. During the war, Zeno is separated from his family by the fighting lines. He finds himself alone in a city changed by the conflict.

Through all these events, Zeno learns deep lessons about being human.

He realizes that life itself can feel like an illness. This is because life has many setbacks and always ends in death. He notices that humans use new inventions to try to stay alive longer. Zeno even imagines a future where a powerful weapon might change the world. The title of the book can be translated in different ways. In English, it is often called Confessions of Zeno. In German, it can mean Zeno's conscience or Zeno's consciousness. These different meanings show how complex his thoughts really are.
