The story follows a young man named Frédéric Moreau through many years. It takes place in France during big political changes. These include the Revolution of 1848 and the start of the Second French Empire. The book is mostly about Frédéric's romantic life and his many feelings. Flaubert wanted to write the history of how people felt in his time. He called it a history of inactive passion. This means the characters often dream about love instead of acting on it.

The plot moves through three main parts as Frédéric grows up. In the first part, he moves to Paris and meets many new people. He becomes obsessed with a woman named Mme Arnoux. He also meets his old friend Deslauriers in the busy city. In the second part, Frédéric searches for Mme Arnoux after she moves. He meets a woman named Rosanette and even has a portrait painted of her. He also deals with money problems and fights with his friends. The third part covers the time of the revolution and more changes in his life.

Flaubert based much of this story on his own real life. He used his own romantic passions to help create the main character. The character of Mme Arnoux was based on a real woman. She was the wife of a music publisher named Maurice Schlesinger. Flaubert wrote about his ideas for the book as early as 1864. He wanted to show how people lived and felt during his generation. The book uses a tone that is sometimes ironic. This means it can make fun of the ways people act in society.

This book is considered one of the most important novels of the 19th century. Many famous writers gave it their thoughts. George Sand and Émile Zola both praised the work. However, the writer Henry James was more critical of it. He felt the book was very dreary and lacked charm. Even so, many people believe Flaubert changed how stories are told. He helped create the modern way of writing realistic stories. His style influences how many authors write today. He showed how to use small details to tell a deep truth.
