The plot follows a woman named Bette who feels bitter toward her family.

She teams up with a young woman named Valérie Marneffe to cause trouble. Together, they work to ruin the Hulot family through trickery. Bette is 42 years old and feels resentful of her successful relatives. She also cares for a Polish sculptor named Wenceslas Steinbock. The characters in the book represent different sides of human nature. Some are kind and patient, while others are vengeful and dishonest.

Balzac wrote this long novel in a very fast way.

He finished the whole thing in just two months. He wrote about eight pages every single day to keep up. The story was first shared in a newspaper called *Le Constitutionnel*. This was done in a style called *roman-feuilleton*, or a serial format.

He published his first book under his own name in 1829. He wrote many other famous books like *Le Père Goriot* in 1835. He often worked late and drank much black coffee to stay awake. His life was sometimes difficult because he had many debts to pay. He also had a deep friendship with a Polish baroness named Ewelina Hańska. This intense way of working eventually exhausted his body.

This novel is often compared to very famous books by other writers.
