Eugénie Grandet is a famous novel by the French author Honoré de Balzac. He first shared it in parts from 1833 to 1834. Later, he published it as a complete book in 1834.

This story is part of a huge project called La Comédie humaine. Balzac eventually placed this tale in a section called Scènes de la vie de province. This means "Scenes from provincial life." It shows how people lived in the smaller towns of France. The book is a masterpiece that explores how money can change a person's life.

The story takes place in a town called Saumur. This town is on the Loire River. Balzac grew up in Tours, which is about 35 miles away. Tours was a very important place, but Saumur is also quite large.

In the book, the Grandet house seems like the most important building in town. The story follows a girl named Eugénie and her father, Felix Grandet. Felix is a master cooper, which is a person who makes wooden barrels. He became very wealthy by buying land and vines during the French Republic.

Felix Grandet is a very miserly man. This means he hates spending any money at all. He is so stingy that he counts out slices of bread for his family. He even gives his wife only six francs at a time for pocket money.

His house is large but very run-down because he will not pay for repairs. One of his servants, Nanon, even puts her foot through a rotten stair. The story shows how Felix's greed can be a very bad habit. He cares more about his gold than the people he loves.

Everything changes when a young man named Charles arrives. Charles is the son of Felix's brother, Guillaume. Charles needs help to travel to the Indies.

Eugénie falls in love with him and gives him her rare gold coins. This makes her father very angry. Felix locks Eugénie in her room and makes her eat only bread and water. He also tries to take all the money for himself. This part of the story is very sad for Eugénie and her mother.

In the end, the characters face many different fates. Felix dies and leaves Eugénie a huge fortune. Charles also becomes very rich, but he is also greedy and unkind.

Eugénie eventually marries a man named Cruchot. She chooses to live a simple life and gives her wealth to charity. This novel has been translated into many languages, including Russian in 1843. It remains a famous way to study how people and money interact.
