arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Eugénie Grandet is a famous novel. The French writer Honoré de Balzac wrote it. He first shared it in parts from 1833 to 1834.

The story is set in the town of Saumur. It is part of a large work called La Comédie humaine. This means "The Human Comedy." Balzac put this story in a section about life in the provinces. A province is a region outside of a big city.

The story follows a girl named Eugénie. Her father, Felix Grandet, is a master cooper. A cooper is a person who makes wooden barrels. Felix is a very miserly man. This means he hates spending money. He even counts out slices of bread to save. He is so stingy that his house is run-down.

Eugénie falls in love with a man named Charles. She gives him her rare gold coins to help him. This makes her father very angry. He locks her in her room and makes her eat only bread and water. In the end, Eugénie becomes very wealthy. She chooses to use her money to help others instead of being greedy.
