King Henry II often ignored her and gave his attention to others. For many years, the couple did not have any children. This was a serious problem for the royal family's future. Catherine tried many different things to become pregnant. Finally, in 1544, she gave birth to a son named Francis.

She later had many more children, including future kings Charles IX and Henry III.

Catherine's role in history changed when her husband, King Henry II, died suddenly in 1559.

Because her eldest son, Francis II, was only 15 years old, she became a powerful leader. When Francis II died the next year, she became regent for her 10-year-old son, Charles IX.

She held great power during the reigns of her three sons. This period is often called "the age of Catherine de' Medici." She worked very hard to keep the French monarchy running.

Without her work, it is unlikely her sons would have stayed in power.

She lived through a time of great change and many struggles. Even though her power was limited by the wars, she remained a central figure.

Her life shows how much impact one person could have in a royal court. She died on January 5, 1589, leaving a complicated legacy behind.
