He is known as a leader of literary realism. This style focuses on presenting real life in a neutral way. He believed that style was the best method for showing reality. Flaubert cared deeply about the beauty and perfection of his writing. This dedication made him a very famous figure in literature. People still study his work to understand how to write well.

Flaubert had a very specific way of working. He spent a long time searching for "le mot juste." This is a French phrase that means "the right word." He did not want his prose to flow out easily. Instead, he achieved his style through hard work and many revisions. Sometimes he spent an entire week on just one single page.

He wanted his sentences to be rhythmic and precise. He even compared his ideal style to the deep sound of a cello.

Flaubert was born in Rouen, France, in 1821. His father, Achille-Cléophas Flaubert, was a surgeon at a major hospital.

Gustave began writing when he was only eight years old. He studied law in Paris after finishing school in Rouen. However, he left law studies in 1846 after an attack of epilepsy. He eventually moved to Croisset to live near the Seine river. He lived in Croisset for the rest of his life.

Many of his books are still famous today. His most well-known novel is Madame Bovary, which came out in 1857. It took him five years to finish that book. He also wrote a novel called Salammbô. To research that story, he traveled to Carthage in 1858. Another large project was Sentimental Education, which took seven years to write.

He also worked on a large satire called Bouvard et Pécuchet. This was his final, unfinished project.

Flaubert's influence can be seen in many famous writers. The writer Guy de Maupassant was one of his students. Many 20th-century authors, like Franz Kafka, were inspired by his precise style. His way of writing helped lead to a slower, more thoughtful way of storytelling. Even though he died in 1880, his ideas stay alive. Today, his birthplace in Rouen is a museum. People visit it to learn about his life and his art.
