He is considered a leading exponent of literary realism. Realism is a style that aims to present reality in a neutral way. Flaubert believed that style was an objective method for showing the world. He focused on formal perfection in his writing. This meant his work emphasized the importance of how things were said. His dedication to aesthetics helped shape modern literature. Many writers have since traced their origins to his unique approach.

Flaubert followed a very strict and difficult writing process. He famously pursued a principle called "le mot juste." This French phrase means "the right word." He believed finding the exact word was the key to high-quality art. He did not want his prose to flow easily like a river. Instead, he achieved his style through intense work and constant revision. He often worked in sullen solitude for many days. Sometimes he would spend an entire week completing just one single page.

He wanted his sentences to be as rhythmic as verse. He hoped his style would be as precise as scientific language. He even compared the desired sound of his prose to a deep-voiced cello.

His literary career included several major works that took years to finish. His most famous novel is Madame Bovary, published in 1857. It took him five years of work to complete this book. The novel was serialized in the Revue de Paris. It even faced a legal action for immorality, though he was acquitted. In 1858, he traveled to Carthage to research his next novel, Salammbô. That book took four years of work and was finished in 1862. He also wrote L'Éducation sentimentale, which required seven years of effort.

His final major project was a satire titled Bouvard et Pécuchet. This work was an unfinished project that was published after his death in 1881.

Flaubert's life began in Rouen, in northern France, in 1821. His father, Achille-Cléophas Flaubert, was a senior surgeon at a major hospital.

Gustave began writing at the young age of eight. He studied law at the Lycée Pierre-Corneille in Rouen. Later, he moved to Paris to study law as well. However, he was an indifferent student and found Paris distasteful. In 1846, an attack of epilepsy caused him to leave law studies behind. He eventually returned to Croisset near the Seine river. He lived in Croisset for the remainder of his life.

Flaubert's personal life was marked by deep connections and travels. He had a long relationship with the poet Louise Colet from 1846 to 1854. Many of his letters to her have survived for historians to read. He also maintained a close friendship and correspondence with George Sand. During his travels to the Middle East, he visited Greece and Egypt. In Beirut, he contracted syphilis, a venereal disease. He lived with these illnesses for most of his life. In 1870, Prussian soldiers occupied his house during the war. His mother passed away in 1872, which led to financial difficulties. He died in 1880 at the age of 58.

His influence on the world of writing is vast and measurable. He was a mentor to the celebrated writer Guy de Maupassant. Many 20th-century authors were inspired by his precise and lean style. For example, the writer Franz Kafka was greatly influenced by Flaubert. Kafka used the language of law and science to achieve a similar precision. Other major thinkers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Michel Foucault have discussed his work. His legacy helped pave the way for a more introspective style of writing. Even the color Tuscany Cypress became more popular because of his writing.

Today, Flaubert is remembered as a master of the craft. His birthplace in Rouen has been preserved as a museum.
