Italo Calvino was a famous Italian writer of novels and short stories. He was a very popular author during his lifetime. Many people in Britain, Australia, and the United States loved his work. At the time of his death, he was the most translated Italian writer. His stories often feel like great discoveries for the reader. Some of his most famous books include "Invisible Cities" and "If on a winter's night a traveler." He also wrote a collection of short stories called "Cosmicomics."

Calvino’s writing was shaped by the world around him. He often used the lush forests and plants from his childhood. His family lived on a farm called Villa Meridiana near Sanremo. He and his brother Floriano used to climb trees to read adventure stories. These beautiful, green places often appear in his fiction. One example is his book "The Baron in the Trees." The nature he saw as a boy stayed in his mind forever.

His early life was full of many different ideas. His father, Mario, was a scientist who studied plants and farming. His mother, Eva, was also a botanist and a professor. They were very different people with strong beliefs. They did not teach their children about any specific religion. This helped Calvino grow up to be very tolerant of others. He learned to respect many different opinions and views.

During World War II, Calvino’s life changed very quickly. He was a young man living in Italy during a hard time. He refused to join the military as a conscript. Instead, he joined the Italian Resistance to fight for justice. He used the secret name "Santiago" while he was a soldier. He fought in the Maritime Alps for twenty months. This experience was a very serious part of his history.

After the war ended, Calvino moved to the city of Turin. He decided to stop studying agriculture and started studying art instead. He joined the literary world through a magazine called "L'intellettuale." He became very involved in the worker's movement in the city. His writing helped bring Italian culture back to the rest of Europe. He eventually passed away in 1985 in Tuscany. He is buried in a garden cemetery in Castiglione della Pescaia.
