Paul Valéry was a famous French poet, essayist, and philosopher. He spent his life exploring many different ideas. He wrote about art, history, music, and even current events. People admired him so much that he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature twelve different times. He was a very active part of French society. He traveled across Europe to give many lectures. He even represented France on cultural matters at the League of Nations.

Valéry is most famous for his beautiful poetry. He once had a period called the "great silence." He stopped writing for nearly twenty years after a heavy storm in 1892. He finally broke this silence in 1917 with a poem called "La Jeune Parque." This poem used 512 lines of rhyming verse. It was a huge success and made him very famous. He also wrote "Le Cimetière marin," which means "The Graveyard by the Sea." This poem is considered one of the greatest French poems of the twentieth century.

Every morning, Valéry did something very special for his mind. He wrote in large notebooks called the "Cahiers." He worked on these early every single morning. He filled over 28,000 pages with his thoughts. Many people think these notebooks are his most amazing work. He did not just write about feelings in them. He actually wrote about science and mathematics too. He said this morning work helped his brain stay sharp.

Valéry lived a very busy and important life. He was born in Sète, a town by the Mediterranean Sea. He later lived in Paris for most of his life. In 1931, he started the Collège International de Cannes. This is a school that still teaches students today. He also held many official jobs in France. During World War II, he stayed active in French cultural life. He even joined a group called the National Committee of Writers.

His ideas still reach us in many ways today. Many famous writers have used his words in their own books. For example, the director Hayao Miyazaki used his poetry for a film. The film is called "The Wind Rises." This title comes from a line in Valéry's poem about the sea. His work also helps people study how we learn and think. He believed that mixing different cultures was good for the world. He thought this diversity helped human progress and new ideas.
