He was known for a very special way of writing. His books often felt like paintings made of words. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1985 for this skill. The prize honored how he used a painter's creativity in his writing. He also showed a deep understanding of how time moves for humans.

Many people call his style part of a movement called the nouveau roman. This movement used new ways to tell a story.

Simon's writing works in a very unique way. He often used long sentences that stretched across many pages. These sentences might have extra notes inside them that delay the main idea. This makes the reader slow down and notice every detail. He also used a style where different stories mix together. In his book Triptyque, written in 1973, three stories blend without any breaks between paragraphs. He sometimes used dates instead of chapter headings to show time. This helped him show how the past and present connect.

His life provided many ideas for his many books.

He was born in Tananarive, Madagascar, in 1913. His father was a French officer who died in the First World War. Simon grew up in the Roussillon wine district of France. He studied painting at an academy in Paris when he was young. He also served in the military during the Spanish Civil War. Later, he fought in the Second World War as part of a cavalry regiment. These hard experiences with war became central themes in his work.

Simon wrote about twenty books during his long career. His novel La Route des Flandres, published in 1960, is one of his most famous. This book helped him win the Prix de l'Express in 1961. He also won the Prix Médicis in 1967 for his book Histoire. Many of his stories focus on his own family history. He wrote about how legends and stories pass through generations. He also wrote a lot about horses because he was a skilled rider. He even used his time in a mounted regiment as a topic for his books.

His work connects to the way we see the world through art and history. He was influenced by famous writers like Marcel Proust and William Faulkner. He used their ideas to explore how humans experience time. Simon was also very interested in how people grow old. He often wrote about seeing the world through the eyes of a child. Even though he was a great writer, he had a humble view of himself. He often said his real job was being a viticulteur, or a grape farmer. He believed farming was a very honest way to work.
