He lived a life of two different jobs. During the day, he practiced medicine as a physician. He worked with children and general patients at Passaic General Hospital. He served as the chief of pediatrics there starting in 1924. At night, he turned his attention to writing poetry. He wanted to use his imagination to find wonder in the world. This helped him see the beauty in things that people often overlook.

Williams had a very special way of writing his poems. He believed in a rule he called "No ideas but in things." This meant he focused on real, physical objects. He wrote about everyday items like a red wheelbarrow.

His poems often felt very clear and direct. He used the way American people actually spoke in real life. He did not want to use old or fancy words from Europe. Instead, he wanted his language to feel fresh and new. This style helped him connect deeply with his readers.

His family history helped shape the way he saw the world. He was born in Rutherford, New Jersey, in 1883. His father was from the Dominican Republic and his mother was from Puerto Rico. Because of this, Spanish was the first language he spoke at home. He did not learn to communicate mainly in English until he was a teenager. This mix of cultures gave him a unique way of thinking. It helped him understand many different kinds of people and customs.

Williams wrote many important books during his long career. One famous book is called "Spring and All," published in 1923.

He also wrote a massive poem called "Paterson" between 1946 and 1958. This poem explored the history and people of Paterson, New Jersey. His work was so good that he won a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry later on. Even though he was a busy doctor, his writing changed literature. He influenced many other groups of poets in the 1950s.

His art even reached out to people who were not poets. His poem "The Great Figure" was so vivid it inspired a famous painting.

The artist Charles Demuth painted "I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold" because of it. Williams showed that poetry and visual art could work together. He believed that art should show the dignity of common life. He spent his life trying to make the ordinary feel extraordinary. He died in 1963 at his home in New Jersey.
