He was a leading figure in the New York School. This was an informal group of many artists and writers. They found inspiration in jazz music and new art styles. O'Hara loved the busy life of New York City. His poems felt very personal to many people. They often sounded like entries in a private diary. He wanted his writing to feel like a conversation. He believed poetry should exist between two people. It should not just sit on two pages.

O'Hara wrote his poems in a very fast way. He did not always wait for a quiet room. He would dash poems off at odd moments. He might write in his office at the Museum of Modern Art. Sometimes he wrote while walking on the street. He even wrote in rooms full of people. He would then put them in drawers or cartons. This style captured the quick feeling of daily life. He called this way of writing "Personism." This was a movement he described in 1959. He wanted poetry to address one specific person.

Music and art shaped how O'Hara saw the world. He was a very talented piano player. He studied music at the New England Conservatory. He loved playing songs by Sergei Rachmaninoff. His poetry was also influenced by many famous painters. He was friends with artists like Willem de Kooning. He also knew Joan Mitchell and Alex Katz. These painters used bold styles like abstract expressionism. O'Hara saw poetry and painting as similar acts. He used everyday language to share his observations. This made his work feel very real and modern.

O'Hara had a very busy and interesting life. He was born on March 27, 1926, in Baltimore. He grew up in Grafton, Massachusetts. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a sonarman on the USS Nicholas. After the war, he studied at Harvard College. He also earned a master's degree from the University of Michigan. In 1960, he became an assistant curator in New York. He worked with many famous people in the art world. He lived in an apartment on East 9th Street.
