Tom Raworth was a famous English-Irish poet and publisher. He wrote more than 40 books of poetry and prose. His work was shared in many different countries. He was a key figure in the British Poetry Revival. This was a movement that changed how people wrote in Britain. People saw him as a very important writer of his time.

Raworth had a very unique way of writing his poems. He often used short lines without any punctuation marks. This style meant the words could have many different meanings. Some of his poems were even written in 14-line sequences. He could write about everyday things or even film noir stories. His work sometimes mixed words with visual art. This made his poetry feel like something you could see and hear.

His journey as a writer began in the 1960s. He was born in Bexleyheath, Kent, in 1938. His family had strong ties to Ireland. This connection helped shape his sense of self as a poet. He worked many different jobs after leaving school at sixteen. In the early 1960s, he started publishing magazines like Outburst. He also started Matrix Press to publish small books. Later, he and Barry Hall started Goliard Press in 1965.

Raworth spent much of his life traveling and teaching. He studied at the University of Essex until 1970. There, he earned a Master's degree in literary translation. He lived in the United States and Mexico during the 1970s. He taught at universities in Ohio, Chicago, and Texas. In 1977, he returned to England to live in Cambridge. He even traveled to China and Mexico to read his work. He was the first European writer in 30 years to teach at the University of Cape Town.

When Raworth read his poems, he did so with great speed. Some people called his delivery "breakneck speed." He also loved to work with other artists. He collaborated with musicians, painters, and other poets. He even made visual art using drawings and collage. His many talents made him a very influential person in the art world. He received awards like the Cholmondeley Award and a lifetime achievement prize in Italy.
