Many famous thinkers called him the most significant writer from East Germany. He was often called "the author of the two Germanies." This was because his stories looked closely at both sides of a divided country. He wrote about the relationship between East and West Germany. His work helped people see how these two societies lived. He wanted to show the truth about how they connected.

Johnson did many different jobs with words to support himself. He wrote novels, short stories, and essays about many topics. He also worked as an editor for books and textbooks. Sometimes he worked as a translator, which means changing text from English to German.
