He is known for making many different kinds of art. He creates colorful abstract paintings that have no clear shapes. He also makes photorealistic paintings that look just like real photos. Some people even call him the "Picasso of the 21st century." His artwork is so valuable that it sets record prices at auctions. He was even once the most expensive living painter in the world. People see him as one of the most important artists alive today.

Richter has many ways of making his art. In the 1960s, he often used black-and-white photographs as his guide. He took pictures from newspapers, books, and his own snapshots. He even used aerial views of towns and mountains. Sometimes he made paintings that looked like they were blurry. He also used special printing methods like screenprint and photolithography. These methods helped his work look less like traditional fine art. He wanted his pieces to have a unique, almost "non-art" appearance.

His life began in Dresden, Germany, in 1932.

He grew up in the countryside with his parents, Horst and Hildegard. His father was a teacher of math and physics. Richter learned about painting by working as an apprentice for sign painters. He later studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. In 1951, he finally began his formal art studies there. After the war, he moved from East Germany to West Germany. He and his wife, Marianne, escaped in 1961 just before the Berlin Wall was built.

Richter has worked on many big and famous projects.

One huge project is called Atlas, which is still growing. It is an encyclopedic work with about 4,000 photos and drawings. These are organized onto roughly 600 separate panels. He also made a famous series called Forty-eight Portraits. These paintings showed the faces of famous writers and composers. In 1976, he created four large paintings called Seascape from his trips to Greenland. He also made a series of still life paintings featuring candles and skulls.

Many of his works connect to things we see in history. Some of his paintings look at the history of the Nazi party. He even painted portraits of family members and victims from that time. His landscape paintings are often compared to older German artists. For example, his work relates to the famous painter Caspar David Friedrich. Richter also uses art to think about deep ideas like silence and memory. His paintings help us look closely at the world around us. They show us how photos and real life can blend together.
