arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Andreas Gursky is a famous German artist known for his photography. He creates huge, colorful images that show the world around us. His work often features large crowds, tall buildings, and big stores. He also captures wide landscapes and the ways people use modern goods. These photos help us see the scale of our modern life. Many people find his work very interesting and even unbelievable.

Gursky has a very special way of making his art. He often takes pictures from high up in the air. This gives him a view of things we cannot normally reach. After taking the photo, he uses computers to edit his work. He uses digital tools to add more detail to his images. This can turn a scene into a field of bright color. For example, his photo of a store shows many rows of items.

Photography has been in Gursky's family for a long time. He was born in Leipzig, East Germany, in 1955. His father, Willy Gursky, was a photographer. His grandfather, Hans Gursky, was also a photographer. The family moved to West Germany in 1957. Gursky studied at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. Later, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1981 to 1987.

His artwork is some of the most valuable in the world. One of his famous photos is called Rhein II. This photo shows a long stretch of the Rhine river. On November 8, 2011, it sold for $4,338,500 at Christie's. At that time, it was the most expensive photograph ever sold at auction. It is still the most expensive photo by a living photographer. Another photo, Chicago Board of Trade III, sold for $3,298,755 in 2013.

Many famous museums around the world show Gursky's work. The Museum of Modern Art in New York held a big show for him in 2001. He also helped start the German Institute for Photography in Düsseldorf. This was the first national place for photography in Germany. His photos show how the whole world is connected through trade and travel. You might see his work in many different countries today.
