He was born in 1967 in Copenhagen. His parents moved from Iceland to Denmark to find work. His father was a cook and his mother was a seamstress. Olafur grew up and found many ways to be creative. When he was 15, he showed his first drawings in a gallery. Before that, he loved break-dancing with his friends. They even won a championship in Scandinavia. This early love for movement helped him understand space. Now, he makes huge art that uses light, water, and air.

His art works like a science experiment in a room.

He often makes people feel like they are inside a new world. For example, he once made a 90-metre-long tunnel called Your blind passenger. Inside, a thick fog makes it hard to see. You can only see about 1.5 metres ahead of you. This forces you to use your other senses to move. He also makes pieces with electric fans that move air around. Some of his works use special lamps to change how colors look. He wants people to feel the world around them.

In 2003, he created a very famous project in London.

It was called The Weather Project at the Tate Modern. He filled a huge hall with a bright orange light. He used a mist made from sugar and water to make it look like clouds. A giant mirror on the ceiling reflected the light. This made a half-circle of lamps look like a full, glowing sun.

Two million people came to see it. Many people lay on the floor to watch their shadows in the light.

Olafur does not work alone on these big projects.

He has a large studio in Berlin that acts like a lab. His team includes many architects, engineers, and craftsmen. In 2008, his team had about 30 members. He works with many experts to build his ideas. He once worked with an architect named Einar Thorsteinn. They made a large stainless-steel dome together. He also worked with Kjetil Trædal Thorsen on a pavilion in London. This teamwork helps him build things that are very large and strong.

His art connects the things we see in nature to our own lives.

He once used a safe powder to turn rivers green. This project was called Green river. He did this in cities like Stockholm and Tokyo. He also built large waterfalls in New York City in 2008.

Some of his sculptures look like things found in space. For instance, one trophy he made looks like a seashell or a galaxy. His work reminds us that the natural world is beautiful and fragile. He helps us notice the magic in light and water.
