He makes buildings that are very simple and clean. People often call his style minimalist. This means he does not use extra decorations. He wants his buildings to feel calm and strong. Many people believe his most important building material is actually light. He uses light to change how a room feels. His work is about the way we sense a space.

Zumthor focuses on how materials feel to our senses. He uses things like stone, wood, and concrete. He wants you to notice the textures when you touch a wall. Some of his buildings feel like cozy caves. The Therme Vals is a famous set of thermal baths in Switzerland. It feels very much like a cave made of stone. Another famous building is the Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria. It is a shimmering cube made of glass and concrete. This building sits right by Lake Constance.

His journey into design started a long time ago. He was born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1943. His father was a cabinet-maker who worked with wood. This helped Peter learn about design when he was young. In 1958, he even worked as an apprentice for a carpenter. He later studied at an arts school in his home city. In 1966, he traveled to New York to study. He went to the Pratt Institute as an exchange student there.

Zumthor has completed many important projects around the world. He built the Swiss Pavilion for Expo 2000 in Hannover. This building was made entirely of timber. It was designed so it could be recycled later. In 2007, he finished the Kolumba Museum in Cologne, Germany. He also designed the Bruder Klaus Field Chapel near Wachendorf. In Norway, he worked on the Steilneset Memorial. This was a special project to remember victims of witch trials. He even worked on a rest area near old zinc mines.

Because his work is so special, he has won many prizes. He won the Pritzker Prize in 2009. This is a very big honor for architects. In 2013, he received the RIBA Royal Gold Medal. He also won the Mies van der Rohe Award in 1999. Today, he works in a small studio in Haldenstein. He has about 30 employees working with him there. He believes you must visit a building to truly understand it.
