Sol LeWitt was a famous American artist who changed how people think about art.

He was a leader in two styles called minimalism and conceptual art. Minimalism often uses very simple shapes and colors. Conceptual art focuses on the idea behind the work. LeWitt was very busy making many kinds of art. He made drawings, prints, photos, and paintings. He also made books and large installations. His work has been shown in hundreds of museums around the world.

One of his most famous ways of working was through wall drawings.

Instead of drawing every line himself, he often wrote sets of rules or simple diagrams. He then gave these instructions to teams of assistants. These helpers would draw directly on the walls using pencils, crayons, or bright paints. LeWitt believed that everyone draws and understands words in their own way. This meant every drawing looked a little bit different. Most of these drawings only last for one show. Once the show is over, the drawings are destroyed.

LeWitt had a very interesting life before he became a famous artist.

He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1928. His family came from Russia. After he finished school in 1949, he traveled to Europe to see old paintings. He also served in the Korean War in places like Japan and Korea. In 1953, he moved to New York City. He worked as a graphic designer and even had a job at the Museum of Modern Art. These jobs helped him learn about design and how museums work.

LeWitt also created three-dimensional art that he called "structures."

He loved the shape of the cube. In the mid-1960s, he began making skeletal cubes. These were made of twelve thin lines connected at eight corners. He even chose a specific ratio for the space between the lines. Later, he made much larger structures out of steel or aluminum.

He also used heavy materials like cinder blocks to build tall towers. In 1985, he built his first cement cube in a park in Basel. By 2007, he had conceived a massive tower made of over 1,000 bricks.

Many people find LeWitt's art fun because it uses math and patterns.

Some museums even use his cube structures to teach children about math. His work shows how simple rules can create many different results. You might see his art in a small book or a huge outdoor park. Even after he died in 2007, people still follow his instructions to make new drawings. His ideas continue to live on through the art that others create using his rules.
