He is best known for designing the original World Trade Center in New York City. He was also a master of a style called New Formalism. This style often used pretty shapes and patterns. Yamasaki designed over 250 buildings during his long career. His work changed how many people saw large cities. He wanted his buildings to be both strong and beautiful.

Building huge towers is a very hard job. To build the World Trade Center, Yamasaki used a slurry wall. This was a special wall made of clay and water. It kept the water from New York Harbor out of the deep holes.

He also used a clever elevator system called a Skylobby. This system used three separate groups of elevators. It saved about 70 percent of the space usually used for elevator shafts. This extra space was used for more offices inside the towers.

Yamasaki was born on December 1, 1912, in Seattle, Washington. His parents, John and Hana Yamasaki, were immigrants from Japan. He worked at a salmon cannery in Alaska to pay for college.

He studied architecture at the University of Washington and graduated in 1934. Later, he earned a master's degree from New York University. He even worked for the firm that designed the Empire State Building. These early years helped him learn how to build great things.

His career included many different kinds of projects. In 1955, he designed the Pruitt–Igoe housing project in St. Louis. He also designed the Pacific Science Center for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. This building had beautiful, lacy arches that made him very famous.

He designed the Dhahran International Airport in Saudi Arabia too. That building was so special it was even shown on a bank note. He also designed many buildings for college campuses and synagogues.

Yamasaki had a very unique way of designing. He often used narrow windows on his buildings. He did this because he had a personal fear of heights. He also loved using pointed arches, which look like the Gothic style. Many of his buildings used these shapes for both looks and strength. Even when his designs faced criticism, his work remained very important. He left a huge legacy in the world of architecture.
