Louis Kahn was a world-famous architect who designed strong, beautiful buildings. An architect is a person who plans how structures look and work. Kahn was known for a style that felt very large and solid.

He did not try to hide the weight of his buildings. Instead, he showed the heavy materials like stone and concrete. He also showed exactly how the parts were put together. Many people thought he was America's most important living architect during his time.

Kahn used light and space in very clever ways. At the Kimbell Art Museum, he used special roof shapes called barrel vaults.

These vaults have thin slits at the top to let in soft light. This light helps people see the art in a beautiful way. In the Yale University Art Gallery, he used thick ceilings with triangular holes. These holes let light in and also hide the wires and pipes. He liked to show how a building serves its people.

His journey began in a very different way than most architects. Kahn was born in Estonia to a poor Jewish family.

Because his family had little money, they made charcoal from burnt twigs. This allowed him to draw and earn a little money. His family moved to the United States in 1906. He later studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. He worked hard to pay for his own school lessons.

Kahn's career grew through many different jobs and travels. He traveled to Europe in 1928 to see old castles.

These ancient buildings helped him find his own special style. He spent time in Rome, Greece, and Egypt to study ruins. In 1942, he started a partnership with Oscar Stonorov. He also taught many students at Yale and MIT. He won the AIA Gold Medal in 1971 for his great skill.

Today, we can still see how Kahn's ideas changed the world. His buildings are famous for being both modern and very old-fashioned.

The Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban in Bangladesh is one of his last big projects. It is a massive building used by a government. His work at the Salk Institute shows a beautiful view of the ocean. Even his library designs, like the one at Phillips Exeter Academy, use huge circles to move the eye. People still visit his buildings to see his amazing use of light.
