He was born on September 4, 1913, in Sakai, Japan. He spent much of his early life in Chinese cities like Hankou and Shanghai. His family eventually moved back to Japan in 1921. Tange grew up to be a leader in his field. He helped shape how modern cities look and feel.

Tange became very famous for helping rebuild cities after World War II. He won a major contest to design the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

His design for the museum used bare, reinforced concrete. The building sits six meters above the ground on huge columns called piloti. He also designed a monument called a Cenotaph. This arch was shaped like traditional Japanese ceremonial tombs from the Kofun Period. The museum's plain surfaces ensure nothing distracts visitors from the exhibits.

His style was special because it mixed old and new ideas. He combined modernism with traditional Japanese styles. For his own home, he used a modern skeleton structure.

However, he also used traditional materials like timber and paper. The house used the tatami mat as a guide for its size. He even used sliding doors called fusuma to change the room sizes. This showed how old traditions could live inside modern designs.

Tange was a very successful designer throughout his long life. He won many important awards for his work. In 1965, he received the Royal Gold Medal. In 1987, he won the Pritzker Prize. This prize is often called the "Nobel Prize of architecture."

He also designed the Kurashiki City Hall, which looks like a strong fortress. This building sits on massive columns that get thinner as they go up.

Beyond single buildings, Tange was a great urban planner. This means he designed how whole areas of a city work together. He was a mentor to many other famous architects. His ideas even helped with the reconstruction of the city of Skopje.

He worked on major projects across five different continents. Tange continued to design buildings until he passed away in 2005. His work remains a bridge between Japan's past and its modern future.
