Renzo Piano is a famous Italian architect who designs amazing buildings. An architect is a person who plans how structures look and work. Piano was born on September 14, 1937, in Genoa, Italy. He grew up in a family of builders. His grandfather started a masonry business, which was later run by his father, Carlo Piano. This family business, called Fratelli Piano, built many houses and factories. Growing up around construction helped him understand how things are made.

Piano uses many different ways to make his buildings special. Some of his designs look like big, joyful machines. For example, the Centre Pompidou in Paris has pipes on the outside. These pipes carry water and heating, and they are painted in bright colors like blue, red, and yellow. Other buildings are very calm and quiet. The Menil Collection in Texas uses special shutters and screens. These help let in natural light while keeping the heat out.

His career began with interesting projects in the 1960s. In 1968, he finished his first building, the IPE factory in Genoa. It had a roof made of steel and reinforced polyester. In 1970, he received his first big job in Japan for Expo 70. He worked with his brother, Ermanno, to build a pavilion in Osaka. This structure was very lightweight and looked both artistic and industrial. Later, he teamed up with Richard Rogers to start a new firm.

Piano has built many famous structures all over the world. He designed the Shard in London and the Whitney Museum in New York City. In Paris, he made a shopping mall called Bercy 2. People call it "The Whale" because it looks like a large airship. He also designed cruise ships that look like dolphins. In Japan, he built Kansai International Airport on an artificial island. This airport has a roof with 82,000 stainless steel panels.

Many of his buildings solve hard problems with smart ideas. The Kansai airport uses hydraulic joints to stay safe during earthquakes. In New Caledonia, he built the Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre. This center uses local wood and glass to honor the Kanak people. He also helped fix the old port in his home city of Genoa. He turned it into a place for culture and tourists. Piano's work shows how buildings can be both beautiful and useful.
