Noguchi's life was full of travel and learning. He was born in Los Angeles in 1904. His father was a Japanese poet named Yone Noguchi. His mother was an American writer named Léonie Gilmour. As a young boy, he lived in Japan. He helped oversee the building of a house.

He also learned from a local carpenter. He took care of a garden, which helped his artistic skills grow. Later, he went to school in Indiana and graduated from high school in 1922.

To become a professional artist, Noguchi had to work very hard. He first worked as an apprentice for Gutzon Borglum. Borglum is the man who created the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Noguchi did not get much training as a sculptor then. He helped arrange horses and modeled for a monument. Later, he went to Columbia University to study medicine. He decided to leave school to study art instead. He took night classes at the Leonardo da Vinci Art School. His teacher there was very impressed by his talent.

Noguchi traveled to many different countries to grow his skills. In 1927, he went to Paris with a Guggenheim Fellowship. There, he worked as an assistant to the sculptor Constantin Brâncuși. He learned how to work with stone in Paris. He also met other famous artists like Alexander Calder. Later, he traveled to China to study brush painting. In Japan, he studied pottery and looked at Zen gardens.

These many experiences helped him create many different kinds of art.

His work connects many different worlds together. He combined art with things people use every day. For example, he designed the Zenith Radio Nurse, which was an early baby monitor. He also created large art for public spaces. In Mexico, he made a huge mural called History as Seen from Mexico. He even worked with the famous artist Frida Kahlo.
