Noguchi's early life was shaped by his multicultural background and travels. He was born in Los Angeles in 1904. His father, Yone Noguchi, was an acclaimed Japanese poet. His mother, Léonie Gilmour, was an American writer who edited much of his work. In 1907, they moved to Japan, where Isamu was officially given his name. In Chigasaki, Japan, his mother encouraged his artistic growth. She had him oversee a house construction project at age eight. He also apprenticed with a local carpenter and managed a garden.

Noguchi's path to professional artistry involved several different training stages. After graduating high school in Indiana in 1922, he worked as an apprentice to Gutzon Borglum. Borglum is the sculptor known for creating the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. During this time, Noguchi performed tasks like arranging horses and modeling for a monument. He also learned casting skills from Italian assistants. Although he briefly enrolled as a premedical student at Columbia University, he chose to pursue art full-time. He attended night classes at the Leonardo da Vinci Art School to refine his skills.

In 1927, Noguchi received a Guggenheim Fellowship to study in Europe. He arrived in Paris and worked as an assistant to the sculptor Constantin Brâncuși. This was a pivotal period where Noguchi learned the difficult medium of stone sculpture. Despite a language barrier, he gained a deep appreciation for the value of the moment. He also met other famous artists, such as Alexander Calder. After his time in Paris, he traveled to India and London. He later visited China to study brush painting with the artist Qi Baishi. In Japan, he studied pottery and observed Zen gardens.

Noguchi's career included many distinct types of artistic production. He moved between abstract sculpture and portrait busts to support his travels. After his abstract works in Paris did not sell, he focused on commissions for wealthy clients. He also worked in industrial design, creating the Zenith Radio Nurse, an early baby monitor. His work extended to large-scale public projects and murals. In 1936, he designed a 20-meter-long relief mural in Mexico City called History as Seen from Mexico. This work included modern symbols like the Nazi swastika and the equation E = mc².

Throughout his life, Noguchi sought to connect art with functional objects and spaces. He designed stage sets for the modern dance movement and created light sculptures that people use in their homes. His landscape architecture allowed him to design entire environments, such as playgrounds and gardens. He even submitted designs for massive earthworks and public monuments. While some of his large-scale public proposals were rejected, he continued to innovate. His ability to work across different scales, from small lights to massive gardens, defined his unique style.

His life demonstrated how diverse cultural experiences can fuel a singular, expansive creative vision.
