She is best known for making huge, wooden wall pieces. Her art is often monochromatic, which means it uses only one color. Most of her sculptures are painted black or white. These works can be very large and stand on their own. Some pieces are meant to hang on walls like big puzzles. People all over the world value her unique way of seeing objects. She is considered one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century.

Nevelson created her art by using found objects. These are items she found in the world around her. In her early years, she and her son walked the streets to find wood. They even used firewood to help build her art.

She would take many small, carved pieces and fit them together. This created a complex, 3-D look that people find very interesting. She sometimes used unusual materials like cheesecloth or lace for her prints. This way of working turned simple scraps into beautiful art.

Her journey began in the Russian Empire in 1899. She was born Leah Berliawsky in a place called Pereiaslav. In 1905, she moved to the United States with her family. They settled in Rockland, Maine, where her father worked with wood. This connection to wood stayed with her for her whole life. She learned English at school while speaking Yiddish at home. Later, she moved to New York City to study art full-time.

Nevelson had many big moments in her career. In 1936, she won her first sculpture competition in New York. She also worked as an assistant to the artist Diego Rivera.
