She was known simply as Marisol. Her art was very special because it looked at how people act in society. She was part of the pop art movement in the 1960s. This movement used ideas from everyday life and popular culture. Marisol used her art to show how being a woman is often a role people play. She wanted to help people see the truth about these social roles. Her work was both clever and thoughtful.

Marisol made her art in a very unique way. She used an assemblage of many different materials. This means she gathered different parts to build one thing. She used wooden blocks and woodcarving for her figures. She also used plaster casts, which are shapes made from molds. Sometimes she added drawings, photography, and paint to her pieces. She even used found objects like an old couch or a piece of wood.

These parts helped her show how identities are built from many small pieces.

Marisol was born on May 22, 1930, in Paris, France. Her parents were from Venezuela and were quite wealthy. They traveled often through Europe, the United States, and Venezuela. When she was eleven, her mother passed away. This was a very hard time for Marisol. She decided not to speak out loud for many years. Later, she moved to Los Angeles in 1946. She studied art at the Otis Art Institute and the Jepson Art Institute. She also studied at the Paris École des Beaux-Arts in 1949.

Marisol's career had many important moments and places. She moved to New York in 1950 to study more. In 1957, she traveled to Rome for over a year. When she returned, she became a famous pop artist. She was even friends with the artist Andy Warhol. He invited her to be in his films like "The Kiss" in 1963. One of her famous works is called "Women and Dog," made between 1963 and 1964. Another work is "The Party," which she made from 1965 to 1966. These works used fake jewelry and clothes to make a point.

Today, people still celebrate Marisol's amazing talent. Many large museums are holding big shows of her work. A major exhibition called "Marisol: A Retrospective" travels to different places. It visits the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in late 2023. It also goes to the Toledo Museum of Art in 2024. The Buffalo AKG Art Museum holds a large show through early 2025. The Dallas Museum of Art will show her work in 2025 too. Much of this art was left to the Buffalo AKG Art Museum by Marisol herself.
