She was a master of painting and printmaking. She also made art using soft pastels on paper. Mitchell was a key member of the New York School during the 1950s. This group was a famous circle of artists and poets. Even though she lived in France for much of her life, she is linked to American abstract expressionism. This style of art focuses on strong feelings and bold movements. Mitchell was one of the few women of her time to gain great fame.

Her way of working was very active and full of energy. She used a style called gestural brushwork to show her emotions. This means her brush strokes were large and showed the movement of her hand. Some people said she painted almost like she was playing a competitive sport. She did not just paint things she saw right in front of her. Instead, she used memories of nature to guide her work. She famously said that she carried her landscapes around with her. Her paintings often captured the feeling of trees, fields, and light.

Mitchell grew up in Chicago, Illinois. Her father was a doctor and her mother was a poet.

As a young girl, she loved being active by skating and diving. She studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago. She earned her bachelor's degree there in 1947 and her master's degree in 1950. Later, she traveled to many places like Paris, Spain, and Italy. In 1948, a travel fellowship helped her study in France and Provence. This time spent traveling helped her art become more abstract. She moved to Manhattan in 1947 to start her career.

Her career was full of big moments and important shows. In 1951, she was part of the famous Ninth Street Show in New York. This show included other great artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Mitchell also had her first solo exhibition in 1952. By 1959, she was living in Paris full-time. She showed her work in many famous places, like the Venice Biennale. Her paintings are now in major museums all over the world. Some of her works, like "Untitled (1960)," have sold for record-breaking prices.

Mitchell's life and work left a lasting mark on the art world. She was a friend to many famous writers and painters. She even had a long relationship with the Canadian painter Jean-Paul Riopelle. After she passed away in 1992, her wishes helped other artists. She left money to create the Joan Mitchell Foundation. This non-profit group gives grants and fellowships to working artists. It also looks after her many papers and artworks. Her legacy continues through the artists she helps today.
