She also wrote many books about the artist M. C. Escher. Her work helps people see the math in art. She even helped create a math tool called The Geometer's Sketchpad.

One of her most important jobs was helping another person. Marjorie Rice was an amateur mathematician from San Diego. Marjorie loved reading about how shapes tile a flat surface. In February 1976, Marjorie found a new way to tile with pentagons. A pentagon is a shape with five sides. Marjorie used her own special way to write down her ideas. She mailed her new patterns to a man named Martin Gardner.

He sent the work to Doris to check it.

Doris was an expert in tiling patterns. At first, she was skeptical about the new findings. She looked at the shapes very carefully to be sure. Doris found that Marjorie's new pentagon patterns were correct. She helped Martin Gardner show these discoveries to the world. In 1995, Doris helped Marjorie get the praise she deserved. At a meeting in Los Angeles, Doris introduced Marjorie to everyone. The whole room gave Marjorie a standing ovation.

Doris has had a very busy and successful career. She was born in Staten Island, New York. Her father was an electrical engineer for the city. She studied math at the University of Rochester. Later, she earned a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1966. She taught at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois. After that, she joined Moravian College in 1968. She taught there for 34 years before she retired.

Many groups have given Doris special awards for her work. In 1979, she won an award for her writing. This was for her article about tiling with pentagons. In 1993, she received an award for her great teaching. She also became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2012. This is a very high honor for math experts. In August 2021, she gave a special lecture at MathFest. Her life shows how math and art work together.
