Daina Taimiņa is a mathematician who found a way to make math something you can hold.

She was born in Latvia on August 19, 1954. Taimiņa studied very hard in Riga. She graduated from the University of Latvia in 1977. Later, she finished graduate work in Theoretical Computer Science in 1990. Because of rules in the Soviet system, she had to defend her thesis in Minsk. This earned her a degree from the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. After Latvia became independent in 1991, she earned a higher degree from the University of Latvia. She taught there for twenty years before moving to Cornell University in 1996.

Her most famous work involves a special kind of math called hyperbolic geometry.

In 1997, she saw a paper model of a hyperbolic plane at a workshop. The model was made of thin strips of paper taped together. It was very fragile and broke easily. Taimiņa wanted to make a model that was much stronger. She realized she could use crochet to build these shapes. She thought about how hyperbolic planes grow very quickly. She began to create crochet patterns using math algorithms to make them. This was the first time anyone had made these models with yarn.

She created these models to help her students learn better.

While staying at a tree farm in Pennsylvania, she made a set of models for her class. Her students loved to touch the models with their hands. They said this tactile way of exploring helped them understand the math. This kind of learning is much easier than just looking at symbols. Taimiņa felt that she had missed this hands-on experience when she was a student. Her models became a favorite way to explain hyperbolic space. Now, many geometry teachers use these models to teach their classes.

Many people now see her crochet work as beautiful art.

Her models are kept in famous places like the Smithsonian Museum. They are also in the Cooper–Hewitt National Design Museum. In 2005, her work was shown in an art gallery in Washington, D.C. Her art is displayed in many countries like Italy, Germany, and Belgium. She even works with a group called the Mathemalchemy Team. This group includes twenty-four mathematicians and artists. Her work shows that math and art can be part of the same thing.

Her ideas have helped many people enjoy math.

A group in Los Angeles called the Institute For Figuring uses her ideas. They even made a project called the Crochet Coral Reef based on her work. Taimiņa has written books about her discoveries. One book is called Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes. It won the 2012 Euler Book Prize. She also wrote a book called Experiencing Geometry with David Henderson. These books help people see how math connects to the real world. Her work makes a hard subject feel much more friendly.
