He is often called the "master of light" because of his amazing skill. He creates art installations that mix natural light from the sun with artificial colors. By making openings in ceilings, he transforms the inside of a room. The colors in these spaces seem to shift and change constantly. This work helps people explore how they perceive what they see. His art is shown in famous museums and public spaces all over the world.

One way he does this is through his Skyspaces.

A Skyspace is an enclosed room that is large enough for about 15 people. These rooms have a special opening, or aperture, in the roof. Visitors sit on benches along the edge to look up at the sky. This design can make the sky look like a colorful canvas. It creates a magical feeling that the sky is within reach. Some Skyspaces even use water or landscaping to help the experience.

Turrell has a very long and interesting history. He was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1943. His father was an engineer and his mother was a doctor. When he was 16, he earned his pilot's license. He even flew Buddhist monks out of Tibet during the Vietnam War. He studied many subjects like psychology, math, and astronomy. These studies helped him understand how light and the sky work. In 1984, he was named a MacArthur Fellow for his great work.

He is also working on a massive project called the Roden Crater.

In 1979, he bought an extinct cinder cone volcano near Flagstaff, Arizona. He has spent many decades moving tons of dirt there. He is building tunnels and openings to turn it into a huge observatory. This place lets people see things in the sky with just their eyes. He calls himself a "mound builder" because he shapes the land this way. In 2019, he began a new partnership with Arizona State University for this project.

Turrell's art connects the ground we walk on to the stars above. He wants to bring things like the sun and moon into our living spaces. His work is not just about the land, but about the light itself. He says he makes events that shape or contain light. Whether it is a garden in Ireland or a room in Germany, his art changes how we feel. He invites us to stop and wonder at the beauty of the sky. It is a way to bring the outside and inside together.
