He wants his designs to connect the real world with the digital world. Ito thinks that architecture is like clothing for people living in big cities. His buildings help people find a balance between their private lives and public life. He is known as a very innovative and influential person in his field. In 2013, he won the Pritzker Prize, which is a huge honor for architects. This award recognized his entire lifetime of work in building beautiful spaces.

Ito uses many interesting ways to make his buildings feel alive. For example, he designed the Tower of Winds in Yokohama in 1986.

This structure is made of aluminum with many small holes in it. During the day, the tower looks like a solid object. At night, computer-controlled lights make the tower look like it is dissolving. The lights change based on things like the noise levels nearby. This makes the building feel like it is part of the city around it.

His journey as a builder began a long time ago. Ito was born on June 1, 1941, in Keijō, which is now Seoul. He moved to a rural area in Nagano Prefecture when he was young. He lived near Lake Suwa and loved the stillness of the water. This quiet feeling helped him think about design later in his life. He went to the University of Tokyo and graduated in 1965. He even played on the baseball team when he was in high school.

Ito has completed many important projects in different places. In 1971, he started his own studio called Urbot in Tokyo. Later, he built the Sendai Mediatheque, which opened in 2001.

This large building holds a library, an art gallery, and a café. It was chosen from 235 different ideas in a big competition. He has also designed buildings in places like Taiwan, Singapore, and Spain. Some of his famous works include the Silver Hut and the White U house.

Many talented people learn how to be architects by working with Ito. His office is a special place where young builders practice their skills. Some of these students became famous architects themselves. Ito also spends time teaching at universities in Japan and London. He uses video projectors to show how his buildings might look. In one big show, he used 130 projectors to simulate the city of Tokyo. He continues to explore new ways to make buildings feel like part of a borderless world.
