Toyo Ito is a world-renowned Japanese architect celebrated for his conceptual approach to design. He works to express both the physical and virtual worlds through his structures. This approach addresses the modern idea of a "simulated" city. His work explores how architecture can exist between different states of being. Because of his innovation, he is considered one of the most influential architects alive today. In 2013, he received the Pritzker Prize. This is one of the most prestigious honors in the field of architecture. The award recognized his entire lifetime of achievement in the profession.

Ito’s design philosophy often treats architecture as "clothing" for urban dwellers. He believes buildings should provide a balance for people living in large metropolises. This balance exists between an individual's private life and their public life in the city. He seeks to create spatial conditions for "borderless beings." This means his designs try to blur the lines between different environments. He moves beyond the styles of the postmodern period to explore new, aggressive forms. His goal is to find ways for buildings to feel integrated into the flow of life.

One way Ito achieves this is through the use of opacity and light. A great example is the Tower of Winds in Yokohama, built in 1986.

This structure serves a practical purpose as an exhaust outlet for an underground system. However, its true significance is how it interacts with its surroundings. The tower is made of perforated aluminum. During the day, the structure appears solid and heavy. At night, computer-controlled light systems make the aluminum appear to "dissolve." These lights are interactive and change based on measured data, such as local noise levels.

Ito has also used technology to simulate environments in art exhibitions. In 1991, he participated in the Visions of Japan exhibition at The Victoria and Albert Museum. For this event, he used 130 video projectors to simulate the urban environment of Tokyo. He later used video projection in his Blurring Architecture exhibition. This show traveled to several cities, including Tokyo, Antwerp, Auckland, and Wellington. He also designed a massive, undulating landscape for the Berlin-Tokyo exhibition in 2006. This project was one of the largest undertakings in the history of the Mori Art Museum.

Ito's professional journey began with a unique upbringing. He was born on June 1, 1941, in Keijō, which is now Seoul, South Korea. He later moved to the rural Shimosuwa area in Nagano Prefecture. He noted that the stillness of Lake Suwa had a major impact on his later work. He attended Hibiya High School and played on the baseball team. After a year as a "ronin" student, he entered the University of Tokyo in 1961. He graduated from the architecture department in 1965. He originally intended to study mechanical or electrical engineering.

His career includes many famous and diverse projects. In 1971, he opened his own studio in Tokyo called Urbot. This studio later became Toyo Ito & Associates in 1979. Early works like White U (1976) and Silver Hut (1984) explored urban life. One of his most seminal works is the Sendai Mediatheque, completed in 2001.

This multi-function complex includes a library, art gallery, film studio, and café. It was selected from 235 competing proposals in a major competition. His work spans the globe, with buildings in Taiwan, Singapore, Spain, and Mexico.

Beyond building, Ito is a significant educator and mentor. His office serves as a training ground for many talented younger architects. Famous architects like Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa began their careers working for him. Ito also holds various teaching positions. He is a professor at Japan Women's University and the Tama Art University Graduate program. He has also served as a guest professor at Columbia University and an honorary professor at the University of North London. His influence continues to shape the next generation of designers.
