Carl Andre was a famous American artist known for a style called minimalism. He created sculptures that used very simple shapes and orderly patterns. His work often looked like grids or long, straight lines. These pieces could be huge public works or small items for a room. Some of his art sat directly on the floor for people to see. He wanted his art to feel very clear and direct.

Andre used many different materials to build his art. In his early years, he made sculptures out of wood. He even made "cut" sculptures by removing pieces from wood blocks. Later, he became very famous for using bricks. One piece, called Equivalent VIII, uses 120 firebricks arranged together. Another work named Lever is a single line of 137 firebricks. These bricks hug the floor to divide a space.

His life and work were shaped by many different jobs and friends. He was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1935. He studied art at Phillips Academy in Andover. While at school, he became friends with an artist named Hollis Frampton. Later, Andre worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in New Jersey. He worked as a conductor and a freight brakeman. This job taught him about the order of trains and rows.

Andre's art sometimes caused big debates in the world. In 1976, his brick sculpture at the Tate Gallery in Britain caused a stir. Some people even used blue food dye to mark the bricks. This became a very famous public argument about modern art. He also helped start a group called the Art Workers Coalition in 1969. His work has been shown in many famous places like the Guggenheim Museum.

There is also a serious part of his history that people remember. In 1985, his third wife, an artist named Ana Mendieta, died after a fall. She fell from their 34th-floor apartment window. Neighbors heard an argument and heard her shout "no" before it happened. Andre was charged with a crime, but a judge found him not guilty in 1988. Because of this, some people still protest when his art is shown. He died in Manhattan in 2024 at the age of 88.
