Carl Andre was a famous American artist. He was known for making sculptures that look very neat. He often used shapes like grids or long lines. His art was part of a style called minimalism. This style uses simple shapes and forms.

Andre used many different materials for his work. He made early art using wood. Later, he used many bricks. One famous work is called Equivalent VIII. It is a group of 120 firebricks. He also made a work called Lever. It is a long line of 137 bricks on the floor. These works can be very large or very small.

Before he was a full-time artist, Andre worked on trains. He worked as a conductor and a brakeman. This job helped him learn about order and rows. He even liked to wear work clothes like overalls.

Some people have strong feelings about his life. His third wife, Ana Mendieta, died after a fall from a window. Andre was charged with a crime, but a judge found him not guilty. Because of this, some people protest at his art shows. He died in New York in 2024 at age 88.
