He made books that children love to read. He also designed the pages to look beautiful. Most of his stories were about nature. He found many ideas while walking through woods and meadows. These walks inspired the animals and plants in his books. His work brings the natural world to life for young readers everywhere.

Carle used a special art style called collage.

First, he painted pieces of paper by hand. Then, he cut these papers into different shapes. He layered the shapes to create bright and colorful images. Some of his books have even more surprises. They might have die-cut pages with holes in them. Other books include twinkling lights or even the sound of a cricket.

Carle's career changed after he worked with Bill Martin Jr. They worked together on the book *Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?* in 1967. This book became a huge success. Soon, Carle began writing and illustrating his own stories. In 1969, he published *The Very Hungry Caterpillar*. This book is one of his most famous works. It was even voted a top children's book in a 2012 survey.

Carle's books have reached people all over the world. *The Very Hungry Caterpillar* has been translated into more than 66 languages. In total, he wrote more than 70 books. People have bought over 145 million copies of his books. He and his wife, Barbara, opened a museum in 2002. It is called The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. It is located in Amherst, Massachusetts. Over one million people have visited the museum since it opened.

Many people have honored Carle for his amazing talent. He won the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award in 2003. Google even made a special "Google doodle" for him in 2009. In 2019, a jumping spider was named after him. This was to celebrate his 90th birthday and his famous caterpillar book. Carle lived in Massachusetts and Florida for many years. He passed away in May 2021 at the age of 91. His colorful art will stay with readers for a long time.
