Ludwig Bemelmans was a famous writer and artist. He created stories for children and books for adults.

He is most loved for his Madeline books. These stories follow a small girl living in Paris. She lives in an old house covered with vines. Twelve little girls live there in two straight lines. They are cared for by a lady named Miss Clavel.

People cherish these books for their charm and fun.

Bemelmans used many tools to make his art. He often used pen and ink for drawing. He also used watercolor and gouache, which is a type of paint. He preferred these because they let him work very fast. He did not like oil painting because it took too long.

He even tried to buy a bistro in Paris to use as a studio. He painted murals on the walls there. However, the project did not work out as he hoped.

His life began in Meran, Austria-Hungary, in 1898. His father was a hotel owner and a painter.

Ludwig grew up in Gmunden, Austria. He spoke French first and German second. Later in life, he moved to the United States. He joined the U.S. Army in 1917. He became an American citizen in 1918. He served as a Second Lieutenant in the Army.

Bemelmans published many different kinds of books. His first Madeline book came out in 1939. It was a huge success with readers.

One of his books won the Caldecott Medal. This is a special prize for great book art. He wrote other Madeline stories like Madeline's Rescue in 1953. He also wrote books about travel and funny stories. He even wrote scripts for movies in Hollywood.

Many people still enjoy his work today. You can see his art in the Bemelmans Bar in New York City. It is a famous mural on a wall.

His Madeline stories have been made into cartoons. There was even a television series with a narrator. Some movies were made using real actors too. Even after he died in 1962, new books appeared. One was published in 1999 about Madeline's American great-grandfather. He left behind a world of color and stories.
